Follow the pirates crossing towards Bocachica fort & San Jose Battery

Historisches Wahrzeichen
The Castle of San Luis de Bocachica and the San Jose Battery were military fortresses that defended Cartagena in the 17th and 18th centuries. Built by the Spanish during the colonial period. Located in the Island of Tierra Bomba controlled the entrance to the Cartagena bay, by the channel of Bocachica (Small Entrance). Its building starts in 1646 by the engineer Juan de Somovilla and its name was related with the governor Luis Fernandez de Cordoba.[1] The Castle was attacked several times being the most famous, the Raid on Cartagena in 1697 and the Attack on Cartagena in 1741. During the War of the League of Augsburg, French troops and pirates, attacked the castle the 13th April 1697 and took it the 15th April 1697, but the castle was not destroyed because of the heroic defense of Don Sancho Jimeno and because of the strategic position. During the War of the Jenkins' Ear, Cartagena was sieged by English troops. The 13th March 1741 the British navy damaged severely the castle and landed troops took it and put it on fire, destroying it completely, during the retreat.[2] In 1753, building of a new fortress started, the Castle of San Fernando de Bocachica, by the engineer Antonio de Arévalo, over the ruins of the old castle.[3] The fortress was completed in 1759.[4] It continues today as an important tourist attraction.

Pedro Claver was a Spanish priest and missionary who volunteered to be sent to a new Spanish colony. Claver was sent to Cartagena in 1610 and continued his humanitarian work in the city. At the time African slaves were beginning to arrive in the city before being transported on to the Americas. Claver spent the rest of his life in Cartagena, where he became a patron saint of slaves, provided aid and treated many Africans who arrived in the city. His previous home in Cartagena has been preserved in its original form and is now open as a museum. The museum pays tribute to Claver’s life within a beautiful house and garden setting.

Discover the tortures in the Palace of the Inquisition

Museum
5 km entfernt
This elegant Colombian fortress was one of the torture headquarters for the Spanish Inquisition and it is one of most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture. Built in 1770, it features a grandiose entrance built in the Baroque style, long wooden balconies covered with pink bougainvillea, and an ornate cast iron fence. The stone entrance gives way to a lush courtyard filled with palm trees, detailed tile work and bright yellow plaster walls. But this 18th century palatial mansion hides a dark secret, a clue to which is to be found on the side wall around the corner to the main entrance; a small window with a simple crucifix above it bears the legend, “Ventana de la Denuncia.” Here in this tranquil setting, heretics would be denounced and led inside to meet their fate. For this beautiful building was the torture palace of the Spanish Inquisition. Under the innocent sounding name of the Court of the Holy Office, the Spanish Inquisition carried out its gruesome work until independence from Spain was won in 1812. The Inquisition’s principal purpose was to defend and protect deemed threats to the Catholic Church, including blasphemy, witchcraft, and heresy. Once a confession was signed, the victim was sentenced to death in a public auto-da-fé in the courtyard outside. Today the palace is open as a museum, wherein many of the grisly tools used to extract confessions are on display. The museum features disturbing relics as thumb screws, the head crusher, and an iron collar covered in lethal spikes.
