Kunst, Kultur und Erholung 1. Das Albany Institute of History & Art, eines der ältesten Museen Amerikas, wurde 1791 während der Präsidentschaft von George Washington gegründet und ist damit älter als der Louvre, das Smithsonian und das Metropolitan Museum of Art. 2. Kunsthistoriker haben die Empire State Plaza Art Collection als „die größte Sammlung moderner amerikanischer Kunst an einem einzigen öffentlichen Ort, der kein Museum ist“ bezeichnet. Die Sammlung wurde unter der Leitung von Gouverneur Nelson A. Rockefeller während des Baus des Empire State Plaza (1966—1978) gegründet. Zweiundneunzig Werke abstrakter expressionistischer Kunst sind auf der gesamten Plaza dauerhaft ausgestellt. 3. Das Empire State Plaza, eine Ansammlung von Bürogebäuden der staatlichen Behörden, dominiert fast jeden Blick auf Albany. Der Komplex wurde zwischen 1965 und 1978 von Gouverneur Nelson A. Rockefeller und dem Architekten Wallace Harrison erbaut und ist ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für die Architektur der späten amerikanischen Moderne. Er ist nach wie vor ein umstrittenes Bauprojekt, sowohl wegen der Vertreibung der Stadtbewohner als auch wegen seines architektonischen Stils. Der bekannteste Aspekt des Komplexes ist der Erastus Corning Tower, das höchste Gebäude in New York außerhalb von New York City. Am nördlichen Ende der Plaza befindet sich das New York State Capitol aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, Sitz der New York State Legislature und Sitz des Gouverneurs.
