Also known as the Independence Square, the square was completed in 1961 and currently hosts Ghana's annual Independence Day parade every year on 6 March. Other iconic monuments at the square include the Liberation Day Monument, Independence Arch and the famous Black Star Gate, topped by the five-pointed black star of Ghana. Together, they symbolize the nation's fight for independence and liberation.

Formerly the Old Polo Grounds, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stood on these grounds to declare Ghana free from British colonial rule. The mausoleum hosts rare artefacts relating to Ghana's independence, a museum, a monument of Dr. Nkrumah and remains the final resting place of Ghana's first President and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
