This gothic building was the house of Szilágyi Erzsébet, wife of Iancu of Hunedoara, Matthias Rex, who became the king of Hungary, when he was 17 years old. It is the oldest house in the city, situated near the Museum’s Square, pedestrian area, where in spring and summer, tourists can rest at terraces, and ca taste Hungarian and Romania traditional snacks, but can also buy souvenirs. Following several renovations, only the facade still displays renaissance elements. Saint Michael’s Catholic Church is one of the most representative gothic monuments in Transylvania. The monument was built in the main square of the city and it is recognized as one of its emblems. On the 19th august 1316, Carol Robert of Anjou issued a royal decree, offering several privileges and freedoms to the city of Cluj, including the right to choose its priest and religious rulers. This freedom would be represented by a new parochial church. Thus began, during the 14th century the construction of the church which should be finalized in its current form during the 19th century. The church has been used, over the years, by 4 different regions: catholic, Lutheran, Calvinist, and Unitarian and was also a witness at the baptism of Mathias Rex, king of Hungary and to crowning of some Transylvania princes.

The Botanical Gardens, from Cluj Napoca, one of the most famous gardens in Europe were established in 1920, by Professor Alexandru Borza. The gardens are situated in the city centre. They include domestic rare plants, threatened with extinction and vulnerable, but also plants from exotic countries or South Africa. The space of the gardens is divided in several categories: decorative, with hundreds of types of trees and grasses; phytogeographic, presenting plants typical of the desert areas of Africa and Central America, species of North America, Far East, as well as main domestic species; systematic, where the species are classified in families, following a phytogenetic order, based on the original classification system designed by professor Borza; but also economical and medical. The best seasons to visit the gardens are spring and summer, when most of the flowers are blooming. Visit hour: everyday 9 am – 6 pm (greenhouses 9 am -6 pm, during summer and 10 a.m-5 pm during winter). There is a tax for taking photos. Discount of 50 % for children and students.

The Taylors’ Tower, point of interest for those interested in discovering the old city fortress, belongs to the second fortification wall of the city, built during the first half of the 15th century until the 17th century. The Tower was built on the south-eastern defense corner of the city, after 1405, and the first written mention of the monument dates back to 1457, during the reign of Matthias Corvin. The use and maintenance of the tower was entrusted to the Taylors’ craft, the most powerful one in the town, from this comes the name of the Tower. Following the most recent renovation (2008), the Tower is hosting the Urban Center of Culture which includes an exhibition and meeting area, but also a literary cafe. Access for visiting the tower is free of charge. Visiting hours: Monday-Friday: 9 am- 7 pm and Saturday-Sunday: 10 am-6 pm.
