Castle Hill and the Royal Palace

Historical landmark
3 mi. away
The easiest way to get to Castle Hill from Pest is to take bus 16 from Deák Ferenc tér to Dísz tér, midway between the Old Town and the Royal Palace. Much more fun, though, is to stroll across Chain Bridge and board the Sikló, a funicular railway built in 1870 that ascends from Clark Ádám tér to Szent György tér near the Royal Palace.

Szechenyi Bath

Recreation
15 minutes away
The Széchenyi Baths are one of the largest bathing complexes in all Europe, and the only “old” medicinal baths to be found in the Pest side of the city. There is an atmosphere of grandeur about the whole place with the bright, largest pools resembling aspects associated with Roman baths, the smaller bath tubs reminding one of the bathing culture of the Greeks, and the saunas and diving pools borrowed from traditions emanating in northern Europe. The three outdoor pools (one of which is a fun pool) are open all year, including winter. Indoors there are over ten separate pools, and a whole host of medical treatments is also available. If you have seen winter pictures of men playing chess in an outdoor pool while the steam rises around them, then this is where they were taken. Water temperatures: 68-100°F (20-38°C). Pools: outdoor swimming pool, fun pool and thermal pool, twelve indoor thermal pools. Opening times: Daily 6.0 a.m. – 10.0 p.m.

Chain Bridge

Historical landmark
20 minutes away
It was the first permanent bridge between Pest and Buda, earlier there had only been a so-called „floating bridge” between the two sides from spring until autumn. The bridge was completed in seven years by 1849, based on the plans of the British William Tierney Clark. Its two large pillars are significant elements of the Pest and Buda landscape, just like the four lions guarding the bridge on each side. The lions were put in place in 1853. The crest on the middle of the pillars were replaced in the Communist era — the original were only restored in 1996. The Tunnel was opened in 1857. It was designed by Scottish bridge builder Adam Clarke (not related to the architect), who settled down in Hungary.

Great Synagogue

Historical landmark
2 mi. away
The Great Synagogue is the largest Jewish house of worship in the world outside New York City and can seat 3000. Built in 1859 according to the designs of Frigyes Feszl, the synagogue contains both Romantic-style and Moorish architectural elements. It was renovated largely with private donations, including a cool US$5 million from fragrance and cosmetics baroness Estée Lauder, in the 1990s.On the synagogue’s north side, the Holocaust Memorial (opposite VII Wesselényi utca 6) stands over the mass graves of those murdered by the Nazis in 1944–45. On the leaves of the metal ‘tree of life’ are the family names of some of the hundreds of thousands of victims.

Andrassy avenue

Shopping
10 minutes away
Andrássy út, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, starts a short distance north of Deák Ferenc tér and stretches for 2.5km to the northeast, ending at Hosoek tere and Varosliget, Pest's sprawling 'City Park'. Andrássy út is such a pretty boulevard and there's so much to enjoy en route that the best way to see it is on foot, though the M1 metro runs beneath Andrássy út from Deák Ferenc tér as far as the City Park if you tire out.

Hungarian Parlament

Historical landmark
15 minutes away
Parliament The construction of the 268-meter-long building was finished in 1904. It is worth taking a guided tour or have a look at the Parliament Library, which opens from the Danube side. In order to access the entrance, you must go around the building from the left.

Basilica of St Stephen

Historical landmark
20 minutes away
Budapest’s neoclassical cathedral was built over the course of half a century and completed in 1905. Much of the interruption had to do with the fiasco in 1868 when the dome collapsed during a storm, and the structure had to be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. The basilica is rather dark and gloomy inside, but take a trip to the top of the dome, which can be reached by lift and 146 steps and offers one of the best views in the city. To the right as you enter the basilica is a small treasury of ecclesiastical objects. Behind the main altar and to the left is the basilica’s major draw card: the Holy Right Chapel. It contains the Holy Right (also known as the Holy Dexter), the mummified right hand of St Stephen and an object of great devotion. It was returned to Hungary by Habsburg empress Maria Theresa in 1771 after it was discovered in a monastery in Bosnia. Like the Crown of St Stephen, it too was snatched by the bad guys after WWII but was soon, er, handed over to the rightful (ugh) owners
