San Anton and its Gardens owe their origin and early development to the Knight Fra Antoine de Paule, a Frenchman from Provence, who was elected Grand Master of the Order of St. John in 1623. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that de Paule's lifestyle was lavish. While still a Knight of the Order, he had acquired a large plot of land near the village of Attard on which he built a country villa. After his election as Grand Master, decided to enlarge the villa into a Palace which he named ‘San Anton’ after his patron saint, St Anthony of Padua. Successive Grand Masters continued to use this Palace as their country-residence. Thereafter the Palace was used as the residence of the Governor and of the Governor-General of Malta during the British period. Since 1974 it became the Official residence of the President of Malta. A large part of the original gardens, designed on a symmetrical plan, was opened to the public in the 19th century. Large parts of the gardens consist of orange groves. The most relevant embellishments have been those initiated by the Presidents who have not only upgraded the amenities at the Palace but also restored most of the building and its adjoining gardens to their former glory.

The history of Mdina traces back more than 4000 years. According to tradition it was here that in 60 AD that the Apostle St. Paul is said to have lived after being shipwrecked on the Islands. Furthermore it is said that St. Paul resided inside the grotto know as Fuori le Mura (outside the city walls) now known as St. Pauls Grotto in Rabat. Lamp lit by night and referred to as “the silent city”, Mdina is fascinating to visit for its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures. Mdina has had different names and titles depending on its rulers and its role but its medieval name describe it best – ‘Citta’ Notabile’: the noble city. It was home then, as now, to Malta’s noble families; some are descendants of the Norman, Sicilian and Spanish overlords who made Mdina their home from the 12th century onwards. Impressive palaces line its narrow, shady streets. Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and Baroque architecture.

The Verdala Palace is the official summer residence of the President of Malta. It was built by Grandmaster Hughues Loubenx de Verdalle in 1586 on the site of a hunting lodge previously owned by Grandmaster Jean de la Valette-Parisot. The palace is known for its surrounding boschetto, which is a large semi-landscaped area that was used by the Knights of Malta for game hunting. It is also surrounded by a stone quarried ditch. The building itself is two floors high and has five storey towers at each corner. The Verdala palace has been in use as the summer residence of the President of Malta since 1987 and is generally closed to the public except for the Ball of the August moon held every year in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Sliema, St Julian's and Paceville are adjacent to each other on the eastern coast of Malta, around 4 miles (7km) from Valletta. Together they comprise the fashionable residential areas, main coastal resort towns, top hotels, best shops and nightlife. However, there are no notable cultural attractions. There is a delightful coastline walk from Sliema (Tower Road - IT-Torri) through to St Julian's leading to Paceville. Sliema is a fashionable residential area popular with the Maltese, and also a popular place for tourists with many hotels, restaurants, cafes and shops. It has two waterfronts, one facing out to the Mediterranean Sea, and Marsamxett Harbour overlooking Valletta and Manoel Island, where you can take many Harbour cruises, and also hourly Sliema/Valletta Ferry from around 9am to 5pm, which takes around 5 minutes, but can be unreliable off season! There are no sandy beaches in Sliema, but there are some rocky beaches and lidos. St Julian's used to be a sleepy fishing village, but is now a very popular resort centred around Spinola Bay. Paceville is said to be the nightlife capital of Malta, although this is not noticeable until the evening. During the day the main attraction is the Bay Street entertainment complex. There is a small sandy beach at St George's Bay.

Malta’s nightlife is unique and exciting, with a large choice of venues in close proximity and offering a new clubbing experience from what you’re used to back home. Nightlife in Malta consists mainly of clubs concentrated nearby St. Julian’s (in the Central/North part of Malta), referred to as Paceville, and open air clubs that are particularly popular on Friday and Sunday nights. Paceville Paceville (St. Julian’s area) offers a wide array of clubs and bars to suit most musical tastes. All clubs are concentrated in the centre of Paceville and the area’s always full of party people on weekends and radiates with energy. There’s something for everyone: trance clubs, R&B and hip-hop joints, salsa bars and alternative/rock bars. Besides clubs you’ll also find other kinds of entertainment in Paceville, including Malta’s largest cinema, a bowling alley, sports bars and gentlemen’s clubs. Paceville is pretty easy to reach from practically anywhere in Malta by public transport. The cheapest way to get there is probably a trip by bus, although regular line buses do not cater for late night trips. There are very good alternatives though: Extra line buses depart from Paceville between midnight and 1am, with various destinations all over the island, and for those who prefer partying till the early hours of the morning the a variety of taxi operators can drive you back to your hotel.

Malta, Gozo and Comino have many beautiful beaches all around the coast of the islands. Apart from the popular beaches there are also a multitude of deserted coves and little beaches sometimes only accessible by sea. Although some of the beaches are small, some are rated as the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. The swimming and sunbathing season starts in April when the weather becomes much warmer where temperatures can reach around 28oC to 35oC and gradually cools down until end October. Malta's sandy beaches are mainly to the north while the most suitable stretches of flat white rocks are along the western side of the island where the major resort areas are. The eastern coastline consists mainly of sheer cliffs, although it is possible to swim in a modest manner at either Wied iz-Zurrieq near Zurrieq or Ghar Lapsi near Siggiewi, both of which are popular with Scuba diving groups who explore the rugged coastline.
