María burgemeester Fernández de Cámara y Pita, bekend als María Pita, was een Galicische heldin ter verdediging van Corunna, Noord-Spanje, tegen de Engelse Counter Armada in 1589. Op 4 mei 1589 hebben Engelse troepen, die al controle hadden over de benedenstad, de verdediging van de oude stad geschonden. Maria Pita assisteerde haar man, een legerkapitein die de verdediging bemand, toen hij werd gedood door een kruisboogbout die hem in zijn hoofd sloeg. Een Engelse soldaat met een spandoek, die naar het hoogste deel van de muur liep, werd gedood door Pita. Ze verscheen zelf op de hoogten van de muur en schreeuwde: Quen teña honra, que me siga („Wie eer heeft, volg mij!”) waarop de Engelse inval werd teruggedreven door de verdedigers.

Wat ooit een voormalig verdedigingspunt was, is de beste mirador van A Coruña geworden. Vanuit Monte San Pedro (San Pedro Wood) zien we het komen en gaan van boten geleid door de duizendjarige vuurtoren. U zult onder de indruk zijn van de aanwezigheid van de immense kanonnen.
