When can OSHA investigate death or serious injury of a farm owner?
|
Owners and employees in family farm businesses often have close relationships, so when unexpected tragedy strikes, beyond a serious injury or precious loss of a life, it is often that much more difficult because a friend or family member is involved. Recent farm tragedies in NYS have raised the question of when may OSHA investigate an owner-related death or serious injury? Owners are exempt, right? Not so fast. PRO-DAIRY's Senior Extension Specialist Karl Czymmek and NEDPA Executive Director Tonya Van Slyke developed an OSHA e-Alert based on recent communication with OSHA staff.

"Show Us Your Dairy Day" Contest
|
The Northeast Agribusiness & Feed Alliance, along with the New York Animal Ag Coalition and other supporting agricultural organizations, are seeking quality "homegrown" videos and photos created by dairy farmers to aid in a collaborative advocacy project. We need short videos (less
than 60 seconds) and photos that show what dairy farmers are doing on their farms and explain why they're doing it. Your photos and videos will help tell the story about modern agriculture through a year-long
initiative to continue the conversation about what farmers do and why they do what they do. E-mail entries to Eileen Jensen at eileen@nyanimalag.org. Submission deadline is October 28. Full video contest details are online.

Veterinary Feed Directive Changes Effective in January
|
PRO-DAIRY's Dairy Herd Health & Management Specialist, Rob Lynch, DVM, posted a Food and Drug Administration's Veterinary Feed Directive Changes e-Alert. Most in the dairy industry are aware of recent guidance coming from the FDA as part of the agency’s policies on judicious use of medically important antimicrobial drugs. As the final phase of implementation approaches, now is a good time to remind everyone what has changed regarding feed-use and water-use antibiotic products which were, up until now, purchased over the counter (OTC).
