In Haarlemmermeer, the area of the Haarlem lake originally drained between 1849 and 1852 in order to protect Amsterdam and Leiden from flooding, there are now 26 villages scattered over an area of just over 18,500 hectare. These villages each have their own features, icons and character. From 1 January 2019, the current municipality of Haarlemmerliede and Spaarnwoude will also be included within the boundaries of Haarlemmermeer.
