1. World largest steam engine
The Cruquius houses the worlds’ largest steam engine: its main cylinder has a diameter of 3.66 meter! The engine could drain up 320.000 liters of water per minute. The engine room, unchanged since 1849, is a miracle of Victorian technology.
2. Unesco Amsterdam Defence Line
The Amsterdam Defence Line, a 135-kilometre-long line of defences was built between 1880 and 1914. This vast series of forts, dykes and sluices was constructed between 1880 and 1914 and forms a protective circle around the capital city. Different elements of the Line are located in Haarlemmermeer.
3. Haarlemmermeer Forrest
The Haarlemmermeer forrest is a 115 hectare park-like area with a recreational lake. It is a regional attraction for day trippers, hikers, skaters, cyclists, swimmers, riders and anglers. Right through the forrest lies the Geniedijk, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam.
