Building on more than two decades of collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and national public health organizations, Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT) continues the legacy of interactive learning and skill-building for professionals at all experience levels. While CDC’s funding for PHIT activities has concluded, the need for ongoing support, networking, and capacity-building in the performance improvement workforce remains critical. In response, PHIT 2025 is committed to sustaining and advancing this work, ensuring that public health professionals have access to the tools and connections necessary to drive performance excellence long after the convening ends.

Submit a workshop proposal to facilitate a skill-building session at PHIT 2025!

The Public Health Improvement Training (PHIT) is back! Public health performance improvement professionals nationwide will convene at the in-person PHIT on October 7, 2025, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This year’s PHIT will occur the day before NNPHI’s Open Forum, October 8 - 10, 2025. Read more about Open Forum here

As in past years, workshops are sought in diverse content areas emphasizing “how to” and skill development. PHIT is for everyone, so we encourage you to submit proposed workshops for beginners, general practitioners, experienced performance improvement staff, and/or health department leadership. We look forward to reviewing workshops that apply to all types and sizes of health departments, as well as those targeted specifically to rural or Tribal health departments. We value submissions that include health and racial equity within each of these PI topics.

This year’s topic areas of focus include:

  • Change Management: Processes and tools to lead change management applications among teams and organizations.
  • Strategic Planning: Innovative and best practice approaches to develop, implement, and evaluate organizational strategic planning.
  • Communication, Engagement, and Partnership Building: Developing effective communications and community engagement strategies, and building multi-sectoral or cross-jurisdictional partnerships.
  • Community Health Assessment or Health Improvement Planning:  Innovative and best practice approaches to conducting community, state, and tribal health assessment and improvement planning processes.
  • Quality Improvement: Building a culture of quality, building and enhancing QI infrastructure and a QI plan, and applying QI models, tools, and techniques.
  • Performance Management: Guidance on assessing needs, designing, and implementing performance management systems.
  • PHAB Accreditation or Reaccreditation: Guidance and lessons learned from real accreditation process examples as well as engagement strategies for staff and leadership.
  • Workforce Development and Resource Management: Innovations in workforce development, recruitment, and career pathways, including diversity, equity, and inclusion in workforce development, as well as acquisition, retention, and management of fiscal resources.

For ease of participants finding sessions of interest, you will be asked to select up to two topics for your workshop.

We hope you will submit a workshop and attend in person in October. The submission deadline is Friday, April 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PT.

We highly value workshops that:

  • Offer a hands-on component to practice skills or use a process, method, or tool;
  • Provide activities that enable small group discussion and peer learning;
  • Inquire about and value participant experience in the topic; and
  • Allow enough time for questions and answers, for sharing challenges, and ideas.
