Overview

As part of the AMA ChangeMedEd® initiative, this hands-on workshop helps equip leaders and educators who have—or anticipate having—significant responsibility for developing and implementing coaching programs with the knowledge and skills needed to implement, refine, and evaluate a successful coaching program. Participants will join a community of educators with similar interests from across the country to learn, network, and share information.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define “coaching;” differentiating it from advising, mentoring, and other traditional faculty roles
  2. Describe the Master Adaptive Learner (MAL) model and explain how coaching supports MAL and life-long learning
  3. Enable participants to incorporate inclusive coaching techniques that cater to the unique needs and preferences of diverse individuals
  4. Recognize effective data sources to provide coaching that supports precision education
  5. Identify and apply competencies and models that make a successful academic coach

Curriculum will include:

  • Programmatic discussion on topics such as: Distinguishing coaching from advising and mentoring; Coaching models; Coaching competencies; Master Adaptive Learners and Informed self-assessment; Precision education; Coaching diverse learners
  • Considerations for implementation of coaching programs at home institutions
  • Coaching demonstrations and pairs practice

Faculty

The faculty includes experienced educators and coaches involved with developing local and national coaching programs for all levels of learners, executives and leaders.

Workshop

The workshop will take place on Monday, August 4, and Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the AMA's headquarters in Chicago.

The workshop is limited to 40 participants.

Tuition

Program tuition will be covered by the AMA to support medical schools, residency programs, health systems, and institutions in implementing academic coaching programs.

Participants will be expected to pay for their own travel and hotel accommodations for the workshop.

Eligibility

All educators and leaders with coaching responsibilities or interest in implementing academic coaching programs.

Application

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 2, 2025 at 11:59 P.M. CT.

Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Friday, May 30, 2025.

Applicants will need a letter of support from their medical school, department or institutional leadership.
