DAP Funds Spur Innovation on a Castile, NY Farm

Silver Meadow Farms, LLC, a 200-milking-cow dairy in the town of Castile, near Silver Lake, used Dairy Acceleration Program funds to evaluate feasibility of robotic milking machines and to update their environmental management plan.
Dairy Acceleration Program is designed to enhance profitability and environmental stewardship of New York dairy farms. Funding for eligible projects may be used for organization of financial records and benchmarking, creation of strategic business plans, design of new or remodeled production facilities, development or updates of Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs) and design of Best Management Practices (BMPs) identified in the farm CNMP.
Through DAP, the farm family moved forward with plans to build a new insulated barn with two robots to milk 120 cows and hired an engineer to design a new manure pit. They also updated paperwork and added short term storage, to bring the farm to a CAFO compliant standard.
“It was money well spent. It spurred us to pour money into the business,” said Russell Klein, who farms with his parents Michele and Stanley Klein. “It was a bigger project than anything I had done. We took the time to work on the budget and the layout. It helped us make better decisions.”

Dairy Profit Seminars at Empire Farm Days 2016
|

Dairy Profit Seminars have become a regular stop for dairy producers, dairy farm staff and agribusiness professionals. This year’s show is slated for August 9 through 11 at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms near Seneca Falls, NY.
The 2016 Dairy Profit Seminars will include:
- Enhanced Herd Health through Effective Protocol Management,
- Spreading the Word – Manure: The Planning and Implementation Process, and
- The Changing Labor Environment – Responses and Approaches.
The seminars are a collaboration between Cornell’s PRO-DAIRY and DairyBusiness & HolsteinWorld magazine. Each session will be held at the Dairy Seminar Center, located on the show grounds. They are free and open to the public.
The seminars are sponsored by ASAP Interiors, Dairy Farmers of America, Farm Credit East, Farm Family Casualty Insurance, Lallemand Animal Nutrition, Multimin USA and PikeSide Enterprises.

Re-Opening of NYSERDA PON 2828 - Anaerobic Digester Gas (ADG)-to-Electricity Program

Approximately $4 million is available from the Clean Energy Fund (CEF) via NYSERDA to support the installation and operation of Anaerobic Digester Gas (ADG)-to-Electricity Systems. Funding is limited to up to $2 million per project. This funding is available only to projects on the wait list, or “queue” of projects submitted to NYSERDA on or before February 29, 2016. At this time newcomer applications will not be accepted. However, NYSERDA may add additional funds if they become available and invite newcomer applications if the existing queue of projects becomes satisfied. Applications to NYSERDA are due by August 1, 2016, 5 PM EST.
