Timelines
February 2024: Online submission system opens
11 April 2024: Extended Deadline for submissions
30 April 2024: Notification of submission outcomes
10-12 July 2024: POWES Annual Conference
2. Theme for the Conference
Power, Institutions and Resistance
However, the POWES conference is a space to share work from a range of areas relevant to the work of POWES, including but not limited to: theorising feminisms, femininities, masculinities, non-binary gender, gender identities, parenting, gender violence and sexual exploitation, sexualities, mental health, health, sport, education, work, qualitative/critical methodologies, social justice, activism, race, disability, class, and intersectionality.
Submissions may include but are not limited to empirical, reflexive, philosophical, theoretical, applied, speculative, and practice-based work. We welcome works at different stages of development and encourage presenters from a range of career stages and spaces to attend.
3. Presentation Methods
Paper presentations (singly or in symposia), posters, workshops and roundtable discussions. We also welcome innovative, critical, and provocative forms of presentation such as artistic activities and performances. Please contact the organiser if you are interested in submitting an alternative format.
4. Structure for all Submissions
All abstracts should be up to 250 words, not including the title. Abstracts need to clearly communicate to conference participants what will be covered in the session, and what to expect if the session includes activities. We also ask presenters to consider guidance on making sessions accessible when planning presentations and activities. For example:
For all abstracts, please include:
In addition to the general guidance above, please follow the specific guidance for each type of submission below:
5. Refereeing Procedure
POWES works hard to make the process of submitting an abstract and getting it accepted as fair, supportive, and inclusive as possible. At the same time, reviewers have to make sure that submissions are appropriate for the conference.
Each submission is anonymously reviewed by POWES committee members according to established criteria and standards. Please note:
From time-to-time, reviewers may feel that a particular submission lends itself to a different format to that which is proposed. In these cases, authors will be invited to consider an alternative format. In the case of symposia submissions, the refereeing procedure will include the package as a whole and the merit and importance of any individual contributions.
Authors will be notified of the reviewers’ decision via email. Abstracts will either be accepted, accepted with revisions to content or suggested format, or not accepted.
When scheduling presentations, every effort will be made to accommodate timetable constraints specified at the time of submission. Please include any information about times at which you cannot present when submitting your abstract.
6. Further Information
All presenters are expected to register and pay at the appropriate rate, by 14 June 2024.
Press Office
If successful, your submission may be considered suitable for a press release, timed to coincide with the conference. If this is so, a Press Officer will contact you to ask whether you wish your submission to be press released, and to discuss the content of the press release with you. To write an accurate press release, and to provide more information for journalists, you may be asked for additional information regarding your submission. Please note all papers and posters are under a media embargo until the day of presentation.
Audio visual requirements
A data projector and laptop will be available in all seminar rooms. If you are likely to require additional equipment, please indicate this when submitting your abstract.
Code of Conduct
i) Authors of all material submitted must confirm adherence to the British Psychological Society’s Code of Ethics and Conduct. Particular attention should be paid to the section on Integrity and the importance of sub-sections 4.1iii and 4.1vi. Copies of the Code may be obtained from the Society’s website: http://www.bps.org.uk/news-and-policy/bps-code-ethics-and-conduct . Also note the BPS Guidelines for Psychologists Working with Animals, copies of which can be gained online: http://www.bps.org.uk/publications/policy-and-guidelines/researchguidelines-policy-documents/research-guidelines-policy
ii) The use of non-sexist and non-discriminatory language. Submissions must not contain sexist or discriminatory language. You may find the following suggestions helpful:
a. Avoid using sex-specific forms generically. For example, use plurals they/their rather than he/she or his/her.
b. Delete pronouns – e.g., the participant completed his/her task becomes the participant completed the task.
c. Avoid specifying the sex of the referent unless it is relevant – e.g., use client or participant.
d. Avoid making stereotypical assumptions about people, their abilities, attitudes and relationships. Be mindful to consider how we assign categorical labels to particular groups.
