Call for Conference Hosts and Proposals

In honor of Paris hosting this year’s CIEE Conference, and to elevate dialogue and attendee interaction during our time together, we are thrilled to launch a new session format: Parisian-style salons.

What is a Salon?

Rooted in the Enlightenment, salons were social gatherings, hosted oftentimes by noblewomen, where attendees were invited to discuss the most important intellectual, social, or religious topics of the day in an atmosphere free of conventional constraints. These 19th century meetings brought people together to converse at an academic level and had the power to eclipse social barriers, drive intellectual development, and influence culture.

Salon Format

Following Enlightenment Paris’ lead, this year’s Conference will feature salons hosted by up to 4 people to facilitate collaborative conversations about the future of study abroad.

The goal of the salon is to begin by framing a topic, followed by leading an interactive discussion with attendees in the room. The format each salon takes can be unique and creative – but should be grounded in the goal of achieving a lively debate and discussion with attendees. Each salon will run 75 minutes and audiovisual equipment will be available.
